Terms of Service

Plain-language terms.

Kino is in pre-launch. The terms below govern your reservation, the eventual sale of hardware, and the open-source AI engine that ships with it. We've written them in plain English. Where the law forces us to use legal terms, we keep them brief.

1. Pre-launch acknowledgement

Kino is currently a pre-launch product. The device described on this website does not exist as a finished, certified product yet. v1 is targeted to ship in Q3 2026. By reserving, you are joining a waitlist; you are not buying a product today.

Final specifications, pricing, included accessories, software features, regional availability, and certifications (Dolby Lab, FCC, CE) will be confirmed at launch. We commit to material accuracy of the claims on this site, but reserve the right to refine engineering targets to measured values before launch.

2. The reservation system

"Reservation" means: your email is added to a queued list. The first 1,000 reservations lock in $149 early-bird pricing ($30 off the $179 MSRP).

3. Refunds & cancellation

Because no charge is taken at reservation, "cancellation" before shipment simply means asking to be removed from the list — no penalty, no fee, no record kept after deletion.

After your unit ships, we offer a 30-day no-questions-asked return window. Print the prepaid return label, ship it back, full refund within 14 business days of receipt. Returns must be in original condition with original packaging; we'll restock or recycle.

Beyond 30 days, returns are at our discretion (typically yes for unopened or DOA, no for cosmetic wear).

4. Hardware warranty

Every Kino unit ships with a one-year full replacement warranty from date of delivery. If your unit fails through manufacturing defect, normal use, or component failure, we replace it. No charge, no diagnostic gauntlet.

What's covered

What's not

Extended warranties (year 2+) may be offered separately at launch; this term will be updated then.

5. Software & the open-source engine

The on-device AI engine that powers Kino's semantic search, metadata enrichment, and upscaling will be released under the Apache License 2.0 at launch. The Apache 2.0 grant is irrevocable; even if Kino as a company ceases to exist, the released engine remains free to use, modify, and redistribute.

The closed-source layer comprises: bootloader, vendor SoC drivers (RK3588 BSP), Dolby Vision license-bound code, and our hardware-specific UI shell. These are licensed to you for use on Kino hardware only and may not be redistributed.

OTA updates

Three years of paid OTA updates are included with each unit (security + features + AI engine improvements). After year 3, security-only updates continue indefinitely; feature updates may require a paid extension.

You can disable OTA in Settings → Privacy → Updates. Disabling does not void warranty.

6. Engineering targets disclaimer

Numbers presented on this website (e.g. "4–8 tokens/s on RK3588 NPU", "1080p → 4K HDR ≤ 16ms/frame", "≥ 95% poster accuracy") are engineering targets, measured on prototype units in our development lab. We commit to publishing measured-on-shipping-unit values in the public BOM tear-down PDF and in AVSForum Beta long-form reviews before v1 launch.

If a measured value materially undercuts a stated target by more than 20%, we will publicly correct the website and email everyone on the waitlist before shipping. If you've reserved on the basis of a target we materially miss, you may cancel without penalty after the correction.

7. Brand & trademarks

"Kino" is currently a working brand name. We may finalize a different name before public launch. If the name changes, you keep your reservation and pricing; only the badge on the box changes.

Apple TV™ is a trademark of Apple Inc. Nvidia Shield™ is a trademark of NVIDIA Corporation. Zidoo™ is a trademark of Shenzhen Zidoo Tech Co. Dolby Vision™ is a trademark of Dolby Laboratories. Plex™, Jellyfin™, Emby™ are trademarks of their respective owners. Reference is for comparative review only and does not imply endorsement or affiliation.

8. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Kino's liability for any claim arising from your use of this website, your reservation, or a Kino device is limited to: (a) refund of any amount you have paid us, plus (b) reasonable shipping/restocking, plus (c) replacement of the device under warranty. We are not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages — including lost data, lost income, or loss of access to streaming services or third-party content.

Your statutory rights as a consumer (e.g. EU/UK Consumer Rights Directive, California Consumer Privacy Act) are unaffected by this limitation.

9. Governing law & disputes

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Delaware, USA, except where local consumer protection law applies. Disputes are subject to binding arbitration under the AAA Consumer Arbitration Rules, except where you have a non-waivable right to court.

You may opt out of arbitration within 30 days of your first reservation by emailing hello@kino.prizmox.com with subject "Arbitration opt-out".

10. Changes to these terms

If we materially change refund, warranty, or liability terms, we email everyone on the waitlist 30 days before the change takes effect. You can cancel before the effective date if you don't agree. Minor edits (typos, clarifications) are reflected in the "Last revised" stamp without notification.
